Email Defense - Common Questions

Answers to numerous common questions we receive from customers regarding the Email Defense service.

  1. Q: Some of our users receive email for more than one email address. Do we need to setup a separate filtering account for each address?

A: No. If one person receives email for more than one email address, you should setup an Email Defense account for their primary email address and then login to the Email Defense portal and configure Email Aliases for each additional address. Please review our Introduction to Email Defense Portal webpage for more information regarding your "Email Aliases".

  2. Q: I still receive some junk mail messages. What should I do with them?

A: The mail filter will normally block 90-95% of your junk mail. You may be able to further reduce the number of junk mail messages you receive.

    • Email Aliases: We often determine that customers continue to receive large amounts of junk mail because the mail filter is not configured to filter mail for ALL of the person's email addresses.

For example, John Doe may have had us setup filtering for "john.doe@example.com" but also receives email as "jdoe@example.com". When John looks at his junk mail messages, he notices that most of them are addressed to this email alias.

If your mailbox is setup to receive email for any other email addresses (aka "Email Aliases"), you should login to the Email Defense portal and confirm that each of these aliases has been configured. If they have not been configured, mail sent to these aliases will NOT be filtered at all. Please review our Introduction to Email Defense Portal webpage for more information regarding your "Email Aliases".

    • Deny List: You can block junk mail from a specific sender by adding their email address to your "Deny List". You should only use this feature if you receive multiple junk mail messages from the sender. You should not add every junk mail sender to your Deny List since most spammers use very temporary and/or fake addresses when sending junk mail. This method of using the Deny List is not effective at all since spammers rarely use the same sending address more than once and places an unnecessary burden on the mail filter. Pleasee review our Introduction to Email Defense Portal webpage for more information regarding your "Deny List".
  3. Q: How can I check my Spam Quarantine without waiting until my next email report arrives?

A: Login to the Email Defense portal (https://spam.dnihost.net/). The first screen will show you a current list of blocked messages in your Spam Quarantine. Your username and password are usually the same as the username and password you use to login to DNI Customer Webmail.
